FITNESS CONCEPTS:COOL DOWN PROPERLY AT THE END OF EACH WORKOUT

The justification for a cool-down period following a vigorous workout is quite simple. Blood returns to the heart through a system of vessels called veins. The blood is pushed along by heart contractions, and the veins' milking action is assisted by muscle contractions during exercise. Veins contract, or squeeze, and move the blood forward against gravity while valves prevent the blood from backing up. If you stop exercising suddenly, this milking action will stop, and blood return will drop quickly and may cause blood pooling (blood remaining in the same area) in the legs, leading to shock or deep breathing, which may in turn lower carbon dioxide levels and produce muscle cramps.
It is at this point also that blood pressure can drop precipitously and cause trouble. The body compensates for the unexpected drop in pressure by secreting as much as 100 times the normal amount of norepinephrine. This high level of norepinephrine can cause cardiac problems for some individuals during the recovery phase of vigorous exercise such as a marathon or a triathlon.
Postexercise peril occurs in some individuals immediately after exercise, particularly among those who fail to use a cool-down period. The least desirable postexercise behavior is standing. Lying down flat is acceptable; the preferred activity, however, is walking or jogging (light exercise).
You should also cool down following a long aerobic exercise session. A general routine might consist of walking or jogging a quarter mile to a mile at a pace of three to four minutes per quarter mile, each quarter mile slower than the previous one. The ideal cool-down routine should take place in the same environment as the workout (except in extremely hot or cold weather), last at least five minutes, and be followed by a brief stretching period.
